Novice vs. Expert Critical Statistical Literacy Habits of Mind

Nina Bailey, Allison McCulloch (University of North Carolina at Charlotte)

Abstract

Students need to be able to navigate the abundance of statistical messages they will undoubtedly encounter in their personal and professional lives. This breakout session will provide participants with the opportunity to discuss what habits of mind are needed to make sense of a data representation from the media. After being introduced to the seven Critical Statistical Literacy Habits of Mind (CSLHM), participants will compare and contrast examples of novice and expert statistics teachers making sense of a data representation. The juxtaposition of a novice and expert will illustrate the importance of developing CSLHM. Ultimately, the goal of this breakout is to demonstrate how statistics/mathematics faculty can support the development of CSLHM among their students, including prospective teachers.
