S01: A multi-instructor creation and implementation of a free question bank for introductory statistics

By Ryne VanKrevelen (Elon University), Andrew Dellinger (Elon University), Heather Barker (Elon University), Mark Weaver (Elon University)

Information

Elon University offers around 40 sections per year (30 students per section) of its introductory statistics class, which is taken by most first year students. In an aim to reduce course costs for students while supporting instructors and giving students relevant applications of course material, six instructors at Elon created a free question bank to be used in its introductory statistics class. The question bank supports instructors in adopting a free textbook by providing access to automated homework / assessment that would normally come with a paid textbook. In this poster, we will share how we went from initial idea to question bank creation to implementation so that other instructors may learn from our process. We will share instructor feedback, estimated savings to students, and initial results from an IRB approved student survey about question clarity, relevance, real-world applicability, and connection to course learning goals. We will also discuss our ongoing plans for question bank maintenance and for sharing the bank with others.
