Fri 01: Stat as writing course

Abby Flynt, Sara Stoudt

Information

Our introductory statistics course at Bucknell University is taught as as writing course (W2), with emphasis on writing in the discipline. A W2 course will: 1. Provide writing instruction. 2. Support the writing process. 3. Teach the techniques of writing needed by students or expected in the discipline. 4. Require frequent and substantial writing. 5. Use writing to teach subject matter. We strongly believe in placing emphasis on conceptual understanding over calculations in introductory statistics and we want to use this BoF session to discuss the pros and cons of teaching it as a bonafide writing course.
