F10: Helping students become good communicators of data: start 'em early!

By Jane Robertson Evia (Virginia Tech)

Information

Employers want to hire new graduates with a variety of professional competencies, the most desired of these being strong communication skills (Selvan & Furse, 2022). In my First Year Experience in Learning from Data course, I work with 20-30 first year Statistics majors to provide an understanding of the field and practice of Statistics. A large part of the class is aimed at helping students develop various professional competencies, with a focus on collaboration and communication skills for budding Statisticians. In this session, I will share ideas, activities, and projects that professors and instructors can use in any class to help students become better communicators of data.
