Discovering Statistical Concepts and Applications with JMP Software (Room 107)

Ross Metusalem (JMP)

Information

Statistics software can help students explore concepts and gain proficiency analyzing real data, but learning statistical concepts alongside new software can sometimes be overwhelming. Ideally, conceptual learning should stay firmly in the forefront while the software recedes into the background. JMP’s easy, no-code interface helps students focus more on statistical concepts and techniques without itself being the focus, and its many automatically-generated interactive graphics make statistical concepts more approachable (and maybe even exciting).

This demonstration will highlight the use of JMP for teaching introductory statistics, including interactive graphing, exploratory data analysis, univariate summarization and analysis, and t-tests and simple regression. We also will see a collection of teaching applets that are bundled with JMP, useful for demonstrating the concepts underlying sampling, confidence intervals, t-tests, and more. Finally, we’ll briefly discuss how teachers and students can access JMP at little or no cost as well as highlight some free resources to support teaching.
