Sat 05: Alternative grading

Heather Barker, Nicholas Bussberg

Information

Oftentimes traditional grading methods can cause statistics students to be more concerned with the grade they have earned in a semester rather than the ideas they have learned, limiting student understanding and growth. Research has shown that alternative grading methods can often help instructors to focus on what they want their students to learn, rather than focus on the grade they get. In the past academic year, we have tried different alternative grading methods, "specifications grading" and "ungrading", and have received positive student feedback about the different methods. Come to this discussion to talk about alternative grading methods for statistics.
