4E: Developing data storytellers using story builder in CODAP (Room 105)

Heather Barker (Elon University), Emily Elrod (Elon University)

Abstract

Exploratory data analysis is a way for students to engage in all aspects of the data analysis process, but it is often hard to portray student EDA in a cohesive way. Oftentimes students share their findings in a static way, sharing graphs on PowerPoint slides or sharing statistics in a report. But with the story builder plugin, a storyteller can instruct any user of their page on what to do to explore the data. In this session, participants will explore how the Story Builder plugin in CODAP can be used as a way for students to share these explorations. The story builder plugin creates “moments” or pages that can be shared sequentially. Each moment can highlight whatever piece of data exploration a user wants to share, as well as give directions or questions for another user to consider. At the end of a statistics unit, K-8 preservice teachers were asked to create a data story using a dataset of their choice. The results of the analysis of these data stories will be shared. Bring your laptop to this session to learn how to use the story builder plugin and create your own data story. During the session participants will be introduced to the plugin, then provided some cleaned datasets that they can import into CODAP to create their own data story. It is our hope that participants see how this tool could be used to give students a voice in sharing their own stories.
