1H: Fostering Active Learning with Model Eliciting Activities

Jeffrey McLean and Michael Schuckers (St. Lawrence University)

Abstract

What can active learning look like in an introductory statistics classroom? This session will explore the use of model eliciting activities, which are open-ended problems that encourage students to invent and test (conceptual) models in order to make sense of complex, real world problems. The presenters will briefly discuss educational research perspectives related to model eliciting activities and present student reasoning, demonstrated during an example model eliciting activity. The majority of the session will be spent with the attendees acting as students to work in groups to engage in a new model eliciting activity. A discussion will follow on how students may reason throughout the activity and how this form of activity could be implemented in introductory statistics classrooms.
