After reading Grading for Equity, I implemented a different grading system. Instead of a one-time test, students have up to three opportunities to show mastery of each standard. Homework is for practice with no direct impact on grades. They first take a test. If the exercise is incorrect, they correct the exercise (review/learn the material) and take another assessment. This can earn the mastery point, or if again unsuccessful, they have a third and final attempt on the last day of class. It emphasizes students’ role in the process of learning. Let’s discuss this alternative approach.
