Using "what is the message?" instead of "interpret"

Information

The use of reflection techniques has surged in statistics education. During a BOF session at USCOTS 2021, we looked at using reflection questioning for summative assessment. Over the past year, we have used messaging as a more discrete form of reflection.  Messaging comes from the data visualization domain (e.g. what is the message the visual is relaying?). Why not ask the same question of a summary statistic or a regression coefficient or the results of a test instead of usually misunderstood directive “interpret”? Let’s explore the use of messaging to prepare our modern students and their communication skills.
