F11: Improving preservice teachers' data visualization

By Michael Daiga (Wittenberg University)

Information

When teaching concepts about data, or numbers in context, an interesting dataset is extremely helpful to facilitating student engagement. During this poster presentation, participants will discuss an activity involving rollercoaster data using a free, online platform called the Common Online Data Analysis Platform (CODAP) that can be utilized with K-16 students. For the context of this teaching environment, the use of CODAP is twofold: to help improve preservice teachers content knowledge and to expose preservice teachers to a technology they can use with their future K-12 students. This activity’s follow-up assessments and rubrics were developed for students at a small, liberal-arts college with a limited number of students in each class (usually under 20). Viewers should expect to not only see how the dataset was utilized in this setting, but also view blinded student examples demonstrating differences in preservice teachers’ ability to use statistical language, visualizations, and depth of data analysis will be highlighted.
