Abstract
SCORE with Data is an NSF-funded project that seeks to build a national network to develop and share materials for using Sports Content for Outreach, Research, and Education in statistics and data science. A key component of this endeavor is to create a repository of teaching modules that connect interesting sports-related questions with appropriate datasets for classroom use. The SCORE Network also focuses on increasing the availability of sports data from women’s sports and sports outside of the “traditional big five” (baseball, basketball, football, hockey and soccer). The SCORE network includes both statistics/data science educators, data professionals from sports teams and sports personalities to guide and review the module development process. This session led by SCORE Network leadership will introduce attendees to the network repository, will provide an opportunity to expand and diversify the network by publicizing the resources available, and will encourage participants to contribute their own modules. After an introduction to the basic ideas of SCORE modules and exploring several example modules, we discuss the process for putting together a SCORE module. Participants will then work in small groups, each guided by a SCORE network member, to brainstorm data ideas, sports questions, and work on developing their own modules. It would be helpful for participants to have laptops with internet access for finding data and doing initial analyses. We are able to use funds related to the grant to cover the cost of lunch for up to 50 participants.
