Abstract
Program and course coordinators of statistics are often required to lead and support statistics instructors in implementing up-to-date pedagogical approaches. Without sufficient resources, however, supporting instructors in actively engaging students with authentic data may seem like a daunting and unreachable task. Funded by an NSF-IUSE grant, the GTAs-LEAD project team has developed four sets of modules and facilitation guides (LEAD modules) that aim to facilitate an instructor community to learn, implement, and reflect on their instruction toward the goal of Learning to teach Equitably with Authentic Data (LEAD). This workshop will introduce three modules, a) Teaching Statistical Thinking, b) Launch-Explore-Discuss, c) Teacher Discourse Moves, which are designed to be implemented in a variety of institutional settings in a flexible manner (e.g., weekly instructor meetings, new instructor induction/mentoring program).
In this workshop, we invite statistics instructors and course/program coordinators who are seeking to improve instruction in their course/program based on the recommendations in the GAISE report. This workshop session will offer a set of modules and facilitation guides to facilitate the professional development of their instructor communities. During the workshop, participants will experience parts of the modules and develop a plan to support their instructor communities using the provided resources.
Although the modules are initially designed to support introductory statistics course instructors, they could also be applied to a broad range of communities of statistics instructors. A laptop will be needed to review the resources and plan/discuss implementations.
