Abstract

The NSF-funded Sports Content for Outreach, Research, and Education (SCORE) Network project has developed datasets and peer-vetted teaching modules for using sports-based examples in teaching statistics and data science. In this breakout session, we illustrate a variety of different strategies for using these resources to engage students. These approaches can range from simply using the data and modules in class, involving students in reviewing the materials, or even producing their own contributions to the repositories. As part of this workshop, participants will have opportunities to explore the existing materials, for example, to play the role of a student looking for data to use in a regression modelling project. Beyond regular classroom use, we discuss models we have implemented for creating activities for a sports analytics club, or encouraging student contributions with a one-credit seminar or summer research projects.
