Abstract
Data science involves integrating statistical and computational thinking with data. Teaching strategies and tasks are needed that both encourage learners to think creatively with data and technologies as well as empower them to create products using data and technologies. In this session, we will explore learning tasks designed to introduce students to the creative world of classification models, including general ideas related to machine learning and algorithms. We’ll use familiar statistics tools and approaches, such as data cards, collaborative group tasks and sampling activities, and also try out some new computational tools and technologies to support learning from digital image data. Start practising your drawing skills, as the focus will be on what we can learn and create from drawings or sketches of familiar objects, such as cats, squares, and so much more!
