B1D: Potential models for teaching introductory statistics online

Jacqueline Herman (Northern Kentucky University)

Abstract

Do you teach, or plan to teach, an online statistics course? Teaching an introductory statistics course in an online environment can be a challenge for even the best teacher. What one does in a face-to-face course can be hard to replicate online. Thus, what are the most important things to consider when designing an online introductory statistics course? I will discuss five key aspects that one needs to consider when designing on online course: content, assessment, organization, communication, and connection. Different ways to approach each of these aspects will be presented that take into account different restrictions that one may have in designing their course. All viewpoints are welcome and we hope that all participants walk away with idea to try in their next online course, as a well as a community of fellow online educators.
