Talking Through Teaching Tensions Together: Exploring Alternate Models of Conversation

Information

Although we come from different institutions across the country, many of us face similar challenges in preparing and delivering courses. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed and isolated when trying to address these challenges. Talking Through Teaching Tensions Together (T5) is a podcast that was started with the goal of having a space to share experiences, advice, and simply have conversations with other teachers in postsecondary education. This Posters & Beyond space wants to bring you in on these conversations! For example, do you need some fresh new ideas on how to engage your students on the first day of class or how to ensure they actually use the syllabus? With the growth of technology today, how do we balance its use or its restriction in the classroom? What challenges or tensions do you face and would like to hear discussed? Conversations in the podcast span all disciplines to highlight different perspectives and how we, as statistics educators, may be able to adapt them into our own courses.

We have successfully applied ideas learned from our recent episode recordings in both introductory and upper-level statistics courses taught from a variety of perspectives (general audience, calculus-based, etc.).  For example, we have had intro statistics students peer-teach the syllabus to encourage engagement, and we have had upper-level statistics students report out their favorite quote from assigned readings.
