We-12: Promoting Student Choice in Initial Interactions with Pre-Recorded Lecture Material

By Julie Deeke (University of Michigan)

Abstract

How can we engage students in the learning process, especially when lecture is taking place through pre-recorded lecture videos?  Inspired by the principles of gameful pedagogy, I designed lecture activities for each course topic that allowed students to engage with the material in a flexible and low-stakes environment for my large, introductory statistics course.  For each topic, students were provided with lecture videos and activity choices including in-video questions, summary quizzes, and wrap up questions.  Students earned points by completing any combination of activities for that topic with a threshold needed for full credit.  I measure success as students earning full credit for lecture activities during pandemic semesters.  I’ll describe how I structured the lecture activity choices for the term, what activities students chose to complete, how students perceived having choices descriptively, and what I learned about the implementation for those interested in trying a similar approach for their own courses.
