Abstract
The workshop will introduce curricular and technological innovations that have enabled the teaching of undergraduate data science at scale to students from all backgrounds. UC Berkeley’s Data Science Undergraduate Studies (DSUS) has built and leveraged open-source tools such as cloud-computing environments, online textbooks, and autograding infrastructure that empower educators to offer data science and domain-specific data-enabled courses at scale.
A starting point for the curriculum is to have students apply computational and inferential skills and concepts to the real-world issues and societal implications. The workshop will give an overview of Data Science classes, frameworks for Data Science majors and minors, and data-enabled Jupyter Notebooks embedded into traditionally non-computational and non-statistical classes. These innovations in teaching and technology broaden participation beyond existing approaches to computer science and statistics.
