Larry Lesser (University of Texas at El Paso)
Information
Data have context; so does culture. But how might considerations of culture be utilized in the classroom to offer engaging, memorable motivation and to support equity, diversity, and learning? The organizer has published several articles (see http://www.math.utep.edu/Faculty/lesser/ELL.html) about content-based connections with the main culture (including language) of the student bodies at his two most recent institutions: Mexican-American (UT-El Paso) and Jewish-American (Houston’s Emery HS). There will be a handout with references and "food for thought" starter questions, with conversation further enriched and guided by attendees’ interests and backgrounds. All are welcome!
