eCOTS 2014 - Virtual Poster #7

"Ensuring Statistical Literacy for Pre-Service Education Majors"
Stacy M. Bjorkman, Walden University; & Kelly H. Summers, Northern Illinois University

Abstract

The field of education is embedding data-collection and analysis at all levels of problem-solving in order to better meet students' needs across the curriculum. It is essential for pre-service educators to have a foundational understanding of appropriate data usage in order to make informed decisions about students in their classrooms. Pre-service elementary and secondary education programs frequently lack training on how to understand basic statistics; however, an understanding of these concepts is critical to being an effective educator.

This poster will present a plan for the development and refinement of a pre-service workshop focused on helping aspiring educators to better understand and utilize effectively data. Key components that should be included in pre-service workshops include a basic understanding of descriptive statistics, reliability and validity as they relate to assessments, and reading graphs and tables. This poster will propose ideas for delivering necessary statistical content and professional development in a nonthreatening manner, with the understanding that such concepts may be intimidating to those without a background in statistics.

Jennifer Kaplan:

This is an important topic for teachers. Do you have workshop materials that you have used? Can these be shared?

Kelly Summers:

Hi Jennifer,

You can e-mail me at ksummers@niu.edu and I will share what we have used in the past. We've only given this presentation one time so it is a work in progress.
