P2-11: Developing a Research and Writing Intensive Introductory Statistics Course for Science Majors

By Jessica Chapman (St. Lawrence University)

Information

Communication of statistical and scientific ideas is critically necessary for informed decision- and policy-making. In this poster, we describe a research- and writing-enhanced introductory statistics course developed as an integral component of an interdisciplinary NSF S-STEM program (Award Number 1458712). This course emphasizes the importance of statistics in the sciences, as well as the necessity of thoughtful and careful communication of scientific ideas. We will discuss the major research assignments from the course, students’ reactions to those assignments, and some sample student products. We’ll also discuss how aspects of these assignments could be integrated into a more traditional introductory statistics course.
