Content Quality Concerns:
A major drawback from this applet is that students can not load data from a file.(This feature is available on a CD-Rom version of the applet.) This limits some homework problems that can be done. Another drawback is that it can be difficult to place points on the scatterplot in an exact way, due to the sensitivity of the mouse.
Content Quality Strengths:
This applet provides an excellent interactive scatterplot for examining relationships between variables. Unlike many applets of this type the user can both enter data in a spreadsheet and put points on the interactive scatterplot. The points can be moved, deleted or rearranged. Additionally, detailed instructions are included that should be examined prior to use of the applet. Parent/Teacher information that includes a basic lesson plan are also included along with links to NCTM standards.
Ease of Use Concerns:
Use of some features such as moving points is not obvious without reading the instructions.
Ease of Use Strengths:
This applet is intuitive and easy to use. It easy to add, delete or move around points.
Potential Effectiveness Concerns:
It is difficult to make large changes to the data once entered. For instance, if we want to add a constant to all values in a data set, it must be done one value at a time.
Potential Effectiveness Strengths:
The interface is lively and colorful and the easiness and complete control by the user is very motivational. The ability to visualize scatterplots in a dynamic way will capture students attention and may motivate them to play with it outside the classroom will help them learn much more.
