P2-08: Teaching Fundamentals of Data Science to a Varied Audience

By Tracy Morris, University of Central Oklahoma

Information

The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) has proposed a new undergraduate major in Data Science. One of the core courses of the program is called Fundamentals of Data Science which was recently offered as a seminar course to prepare for the new major. To our surprise, a large number of students from a variety of majors, including Psychology, Engineering, Biology, and others, enrolled in the course. The enrollment also included both undergraduate and graduate students. This resulted in quite a varied audience. The course culminated in a group project in which students tackled a data science problem provided by the instructor. This poster will detail the successes and challenges encountered in the first offering of this new course, both from the instructor's and the student's point of view.
