Applications of Learning Science Research in a "First Course" in Undergraduate Statistics: A Workshop for New (or Curious) Instructors

Denny Garvis (Williams School, WLU)

Abstract

Substantial empirical evidence focusing on learning science supports the emergence of adaptive learning as a prominent pedagogical recommendation. Applying these pedagogical practices in undergraduate Statistics is consistent with the long-term instructional emphasis on “learning statistics by doing statistics.” The primary focus of this Workshop will be introducing findings from Learning Science research and illustrating the adaptive learning perspective embedded in the Statistics courseware materials created and supported by the Open Learning Initiative (OLI), a flagship project of the Simon Initiative at Carnegie Mellon University. Both new as well as curious Statistics instructors may find beneficial pedagogical solutions as well as possible impactful course improvements.
