3A: How to get Bayesian methods into the curriculum and into the classroom

John Krushke (Indiana University)

Abstract

Bayesian methods are in common use by professionals in machine learning, data science, and all fields of scientific research, because Bayesian methods accomplish important goals beyond p values. How do we get Bayesian methods into the curriculum and into the classroom? It's possible to have a separate course in Bayesian methods, but most students won't take an entire additional class, many instructors are not keen to prep an entire new course, and separate courses can leave students wondering how Bayesian methods relate to frequentist methods. Therefore a pragmatic approach may be to infiltrate existing stats classes with modules about Bayesian methods. Modules can show Bayesian and frequentist methods side by side, helping students learn both approaches more deeply.
