Intro to R/Rstudio for High School/New Users

Christopher Peter Makris (Carnegie Mellon Statistics & Data Science)

Information

Over the last few decades the R programming language has grown in popularity. Its flexibility to handle a myriad of complex data problems and free availability lend to R quickly becoming the standard for programming in statistics and data science — however, ironically, this flexibility often instills fear of difficulty to new users. In this talk, we aim to quell this fear. We will primarily discuss various methods behind learning R and programming through both the lens of the individual student with no programming expertise, and also the lens of the instructor teaching to an audience with no programming background. Additionally, we will discuss advice for programmers who may be familiar with other languages (e.g., Python, SAS, SPSS, etc.) who are seeking to dive into R for the first time.
