By Laura Hildreth, Erin Strickland, Jacob Swisher, & Michelle Miley (Montana State University)

Abstract

Effective communication is often considered to be a crucial and essential skill for statisticians. Despite this, little attention has been given to implementing approaches that foster communication skills in statistics. The purpose of this poster is to present one approach we used to foster written communication skills in statistics graduate students. Through a collaboration with the Writing Center at Montana State University, four workshops were developed that focused on written communication in statistics for graduate students in statistics. The topics and structure of these workshops are discussed as are recommendations for others wishing to implement similar workshops. We also present results from pre- and post-surveys administered to workshop participants to evaluate how participants’ attitudes towards writing changed over the course of these workshops.
