The cartoon for our 108th cartoon caption contest in May is shown above. Amongst the submissions for the contest, the judges found the winning caption for the cartoon to be “Even in a golden age of data analysis and visualization, it is important to remember the data-generation process is often prehistoric.” submitted by Sara Colando, a student at Carnegie Mellon University. Sara’s caption can be used to discuss how the interpretation of data must be informed by a knowledge of the how the data was generated. An honorable mention this contest goes to Jerry Nedelman from the TB Alliance for his submission: “In days of old, we'd roll the dice. With data we can slice and dice,” to illustrate how the availability of large datasets combined with new computational tools and a team approach can generate new insights.
Thanks to everyone who submitted a caption and congratulations to our winners!
