June Results:

The June caption contest cartoon is shown above. The judges found the winning caption to be “A big outlier can create havoc with your normality assumptions” submitted by Charlie Smith from North Carolina State University.  Charlie’s caption illustrates the idea that statistical procedures based on the normality assumptions are often sensitive to heavy tailed populations and outliers.  Two honorable mentions this month go to Larry Lesser from The University of Texas at El Paso for the caption "Lighter-tailed normal distributions were no match for the bell-igerent T-wrecks!”  Which can be used to discuss the addd variability from needing to estimate the standard deviation and how that is reflected in the difference between the T-distribution and the Normal distribution; and to Laila Poisson from Henry Ford Health for the caption “Breaking news - Big-data algorithms chase out normal distribution theories. Will statistics evolve or go extinct?” Laila’s caption can start a conversation about the difference between Data Science and Statistics and how each plays an important role.

Thanks to everyone who submitted a caption and congratulations to our winners!
