December Results:
The cartoon for our 103rd cartoon caption contest in December is shown above. Amongst the 58 submissions for the contest, the judges found the winning caption for the cartoon to be “Young John Tukey first plays in someone else's yard” submitted by Larry Lesser from The University of Texas at El Paso. Larry’s caption can be used in discussing how modern tools in data science have precursors in the Exploratory Data Analysis techniques developed by John Tukey who famously described the interdisciplinary nature of statistics with his quote "The best thing about being a statistician is that you get to play in everyone's backyard." An honorable mention in this contest goes to Noah Petersen, a student North Broward Preparatory School, for the caption "Taking a leap of faith into the data pit: some land on insights, others need a bounce-back!” Leading to discussions about what type(s) of graphics and data gathering techniques lead to insights (and which ones don’t) in different situations. A second honorable mention goes to Eric Vance, at University of Colorado Boulder for the caption “Statistics: Make a Splash with Data!” Eric’s caption can be used in a conversation about the importance of Statistics in understanding the world.

Thanks to everyone who submitted a caption and congratulations to our winners!
