PnB-Th08 - JMP LearnBot: A Custom AI Chatbot for On-Demand Help with Statistics and Software

By Ross Metusalem (JMP Statistical Discovery)

Information

The JMP LearnBot is a freely available, customized AI chatbot that can be added to JMP Student Edition statistics software, which is available to students and instructors at no cost. Using JMP's library of learning and support materials as a knowledge base, the LearnBot provides accurate, on-demand instructions for using JMP Student Edition, so students can focus more on statistical thinking and less on navigating software. It also can answer student questions about statistics concepts and techniques, providing an added layer of instructional support. The LearnBot is primarily useful outside the classroom as personalized instructional support when the instructor or TAs are not immediately available. It also can help scale in-class data analysis exercises by freeing instructors and TAs from the need to answer basic software questions. The LearnBot is applicable in any high school or university statistics course, though it is particularly well-suited for students newer to statistics and/or JMP software. The presentation will demonstrate the LearnBot, explain how it works, and show how to access and install it. It also will provide recommendations for implementation, including modeling use for students, setting expectations regarding the types of questions that students should (and shouldn’t) use LearnBot to answer, and demonstrating that the LearnBot is more consistent and accurate than open chatbots such as ChatGPT. With the LearnBot being a relatively new tool, the JMP team also will welcome feedback from any instructors who are using it in the classroom.
