PnB-W02 - An AI-Based Educational Technology to Foster Interdisciplinary Data Literacy in Secondary Education

The DUDa project (Digital, adaptive support for generic and discipline-related Data Literacy) investigates approaches to promote data literacy in secondary schools. Its innovation lies in combining a generic statistical perspective with a discipline-related biological lens—focusing on topics such as biodiversity and health—while supporting learning with AI-based educational technology. We develop learning units integrated into the technology that guide students through a Data Literacy framework using authentic datasets (e.g., tick-borne encephalitis cases combined with climate data) and task assignments in CODAP (e.g., identifying patterns explaining rising disease cases). An AI chatbot provides individualized support, helping students navigate CODAP or access background knowledge. This approach sparks joy and curiosity by enabling students to explore meaningful, real-world questions and pursue analyses aligned with their own interests. The web-based platform allows students to engage independently, making data analysis a personal journey of discovery. Pilot data will be collected from upper secondary school students during the spring semester. In the future, teachers will be able to access and integrate these units into regular instruction. The system supports formative assessment by providing tailored feedback, helping students refine their thinking while allowing instructors to evaluate learning outcomes. Initial qualitative data will inform revisions to both the technology and learning units, with further cycles planned to assess effectiveness. The units are designed for upper secondary classrooms of approximately 30 students, organized into small groups or individual work, with at least one technical device per group. Students engage in authentic problem-solving, developing and testing hypotheses while practicing responsible AI use. By working with real datasets, students experience the relevance of data literacy in a data-driven world (Binkley et al., 2012; Neumann et al., 2013). CODAP’s interactive environment, the AI chatbot, and interdisciplinary context transform data analysis into an exploratory process, encouraging independent investigation and meaningful reasoning. Through DUDa, AI enhances personalized learning and creativity rather than replacing it, allowing students to discover insights, test their ideas, and experience the joy of inquiry and exploration in data literacy education.
