PnB-W01 - Accessible Multimodal Math Materials Made Easy using Quarto

By Debbie Yuster (Ramapo College of New Jersey)

Information

The importance of accessibility in digital course materials will soon become enshrined in federal law. In this presentation, I'll demonstrate a fairly easy way to create math handouts and worksheets in multiple formats, including screen-reader friendly, all from a single source file. Quarto, an open source tool, allows instructors to draft documents using LaTeX notation for equations and simple Markdown for the document layout. With just a few clicks, the document can be rendered into (1) a PDF worksheet, (2) HTML code for accessible web content in your LMS, (3) a slideshow, (4) a Word document, and more. The LMS version is mobile responsive and screen reader friendly, while the PDF is great for printing and writing on. Who says you can't have it all? I’ve used Quarto to create and share course materials in multiple formats at my public liberal arts college, which primarily serves undergraduates and includes many first-generation students. My students have really enjoyed the ability to access course content in both a full-featured online format and as printable handouts.'
