Best Practices in Teaching Introductory Statistics in the Modern Classroom (Part 1 of 2)

Abstract

As expectations of students and institutions about the topics and methodology for teaching Statistics continue to evolve, many teachers are left uncertain where to begin. In this workshop, recognized leaders in the teaching of statistics will demonstrate how content and pedagogy are inextricably linked when one thinks about building a GAISE-College report compliant course. We will build on this by demonstrating how statistical thinking, statistical investigations, and multivariable thinking can be brought into an introductory course that makes heavy use of simulations in developing inferential reasoning. In the second half of the workshop, we’ll discuss how these topics and technology approaches look in the modern classroom. We will address active learning in online courses (asynchronous and synchronous), approaches for using and managing AI, new approaches to assessment, and more. Teachers will leave invigorated and prepared to change how and what they teach in introductory statistics in fall 2026.
