Assessing for Success: Balancing Tools, Analysis, and Storytelling in Introductory Data Science Education

Hunter Glanz & Brennan Davis

Abstract

Exploring the frontier of student assessment in introductory data science, this session delves into the unique challenges and innovative solutions for evaluating diverse student skills. How do you balance assessing software tool skills with data analysis and storytelling? Participants are encouraged to share their experiences (good and bad!) related to the most efficient and effective ways to gauge student knowledge and provide feedback in a data science course. We will share our personal experiences, success stories (and challenges!) and discuss strategies to scaffold data analysis and software use.
