Abstract
This workshop will demo a reading guide assignment that asks students to read a piece of journalism that is related to computing, algorithms, and/or data and answer questions about the reading as a way of navigating the text. These questions go beyond summary and prompt students to think about the broader context and ethics surrounding computing in a real-world setting. Each reading guide is designed for modularity. Instructors can mix and match the sections and questions within sections to better fit their classroom context. For example, one instructor may want to cover many different reading guides throughout a course but spend a short amount of time on each, picking one or two section's worth of questions to assign per guide. Other instructors may choose to deep-dive on one or two reading guides, using more of the sections but cutting particular questions that are less relevant to their classroom setting. A template will also be shared to help instructors build a reading guide based on their own assigned readings.
