Information

As artificial intelligence use is becoming increasingly common among high schoolers, critical thinking and statistical literacy is on the decline. In a time like this, it is important to train students to digest statistical messages on social media critically by evaluating biases and the research methods of a study. More specifically, we suggest incorporating explicit teaching of and practice using the critical statistical literacy habits of mind (CSLHM) framework (Bailey & McCulloch, 2023). This study investigates how high school students engage in critical statistical literacy habits of mind when creating short response videos to a social media post featuring a data visualization. It is a multiple case study in which students had different levels of exposure to the CSLHM framework. We will share preliminary findings from this ongoing study, as well as implications for using similar activities in high school statistics courses and undergraduate introductory statistics courses. The study is based on an activity piloted in an introductory statistics course for high school students taught at a mid-sized R2 university during the summer. Participants were high school students (9th–11th grade) with minimal exposure to statistics, as most were enrolled in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, or Precalculus.
