Abstract
Generative AI has made it challenging to assess what students really understand. Oral exams provide an alternative assessment that brings its own set of benefits and difficulties. In this session, the presenters will discuss their use of oral exams in their classes. These assessments help ensure academic integrity, allow students to show their knowledge of the material on topics they may struggle demonstrating on written assessments, identify weaknesses in verbalizing understanding from otherwise high-performing students, and build stronger connections between professors and students. In addition to discussing our experiences, the presenters will also discuss the setup and logistics of creating an oral exam, provide example exam questions and rubrics, and give other helpful tips to consider when developing an oral exam.
