Oral exams provide a unique way for students to demonstrate their understanding of foundational concepts in a flexible and holistic way. They are also particularly attractive to instructors today as generative AI facilitates academic dishonesty in other assessment formats. This motivates the need for a discussion centered around best practices and pitfalls in administering oral exams. For instance, what types of learning objectives are well suited or poorly suited to be assessed using oral exams? How can oral exams be made more efficient so that they can be feasibly implemented in larger courses? What are some key equity concerns?
