Hi Lonnecke,
I would basically just forward whatever you’d like about the postdoc position.
Do you want a description of any kind in the body of the email that I pass along? I think a note from you helps get more attention than if I try to come up with something on your behalf.
Thanks and congratulations on defending your dissertation! I’ve just taken care of it, so please take a look and let me know if you suggest any changes.

Good evening, all!
Posting on behalf of my colleague/department...
Dear all, starting Summer 2024, the Division of Biostatistics at the
University of Minnesota, in collaboration with the Masonic Institute for
the Developing Brain, will be hosting a 10-week Summer Research Experience
for Undergraduates (REU), called Equitable Data Science in Adolescent
Development
<https://www.sph.umn.edu/academics/institutes/equitable-data-science/>.
This 10-week REU is a paid, full-time position designed to give
undergraduate students hands-on training and research experience in data
science, statistical modeling and machine learning, and scientific
communication. Topics on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and their
role in data science form the foundations of this program, emphasized early
through DEI modules and discussions. Students will analyze data from the
Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, the largest
longitudinal study on adolescent development in the United States.
Our website
<https://www.sph.umn.edu/academics/institutes/equitable-data-science/> contains
more details about the program. If you know any undergraduate students who
may be interested, please share this website with them, and please
encourage them to apply
<https://umn.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0dFvR51UxYpNJEG>. The deadline for
applications is *31 January 2024*.
If you have any questions about this program, please let me know (

The Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education is happy to announce our 89th Cartoon Caption Contest! Each month a cartoon, drawn by British cartoonist John Landers, is posted for you and your students to suggest statistical captions (cartoons are posted at the beginning of the month and submissions are due at the end of the month). The caption contest is offered as a fun way to get your students thinking independently about statistical concepts - a great activity for the start of the new term.
The next cartoon and the entry rules for the contest ending October 31 are at
https://www.causeweb.org/cause/caption-contest/october/2023/submissions
The best submission will be posted on CAUSEweb and the winner(s) will receive their choice of a coffee mug or t-shirt imprinted with the final cartoon or free registration to eCOTS2024.
September Results:
The September caption contest cartoon is shown above. The judges found the winning caption to be “The first data science hackathon” submitted by Larry Lesser from The University of Texas at El Paso. Larry’s caption might be used in announcing hackathon style events and in discussing the importance of collaboration in a team-based search for meaning in data. An honorable mention this month goes to Jeremy Case from Taylor University for his caption: “Looking at the data is half the battle,” that can be used to remind students of the importance of examining data visualizations as an early step in understanding a data set. A second honorable mention goes to an anonymous submission: “Thanks Guys. Let's do one more simulation after lunch and my model should be ready to go,” that might be used to make the point that you may have to go to great lengths to calibrate a simulation model with reality.
Thanks to everyone who submitted a caption and congratulations to our winners!
Teaching the Difficult Past of Statistics to Improve the Future
Tuesday, October 17, 2023 4:00 - 4:30 pm EDT
Presented by: Lee Kennedy-Shaffer (Vassar College)
Abstract: In this October edition of the JSDSE/cause webinar series, we highlight the 2023 article: Teaching the Difficult Past of Statistics to Improve the Future. The author will discuss how, in recent years, the discipline of statistics has begun reckoning with its difficult history. Institutions are reconsidering names that have honored key historical figures in statistics who have deep ties to eugenics movements and racial and class prejudice. These names, however, continue to appear in our classrooms, where we teach the methods created by these individuals, raising the question of how instructors should address their legacies. Three examples of famous statisticians and their work—Francis Galton’s use of conditional probabilities to demonstrate “hereditary talent,” Karl Pearson’s attempt to quantify the intelligence of Jewish immigrant students, and Ronald A. Fisher’s creation of the analysis of variance to de-emphasize environment in human development—highlight the intimate ties between statistics and eugenics. These examples, along with a discussion of the context of these men, eugenics movements, and the statisticians and scientists who opposed their eugenic programs, can humanize the field for students, teach them about the challenges in accurate and unbiased data collection and analysis, and connect historical mistakes to contemporary ethical issues. Confronting this history in the classroom can both improve the teaching of the statistical methodologies themselves and begin a broader conversation about the role of statistics in the world.
