We want our students to be equipped with real-world data analysis experience before they graduate so that they can benefit in at least three ways: they receive the opportunity to (i) motivate their learning, (ii) apply their learning, and (iii) build their resumes. However, it can also be difficult to build the infrastructure to launch such a program. We will learn from each others' experiments in community engagement and how to maximize the benefits our institutions and students get from these engagements. One experiment we can (optionally) analyze is the DataJam, a course started at the University of Pittsburgh,in which college students mentor high school students in an international data analysis project. I can share my experiences launching this program at my institution, and how it led to work with community colleges, a non-profit, and student research at R1 universities. We can extract the most powerful components from our experiences to create suggestions for anyone looking to create community-engaged student experiences.
