P4-05: Statistical Consulting Experiences at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions

By Tracy Morris, Cynthia Murray, & Tyler Cook (University of Central Oklahoma)

Abstract

SCHOLAR (Statistical Consulting Help for Organization Leaders and Academic Researchers) is an extracurricular statistical consulting group founded in 2009 at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO). SCHOLAR is staffed by undergraduate students, from a variety of majors at UCO, who work in interdisciplinary teams on projects submitted by researchers from UCO or representatives of organizations in the community. SCHOLAR students meet with their clients to develop research questions, collect and organize any necessary data, analyze the data, and prepare final reports for the clients.  Since 2009, more than 50 students have participated in SCHOLAR, and more than 40 projects have been completed. In 2016 we were awarded an NSF IUSE grant to study the impacts of SCHOLAR on both students and clients. In this presentation we will detail student outcomes, including presentations, attitudes toward graduate school, understanding of statistics, and confidence in research abilities.
