Cracking the Code: Teaching Cybersecurity with Music

Presented by
Merryl Goldberg (California State University San Marcos)
-
Abstract

In this session Merryl will describe how she evaded the KGB during the Cold War with a secret musical code and how that code, and indeed music are key to core principles of cybersecurity.  Merryl is working with CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency) to examine the preparation of cybersecurity professionals specifically how the arts matter in the field. Some of the overlapping themes where music can play a fundamental role in teaching cybersecurity include: empathy, feedback, active listening, identifying your audience, seeking diverse understandings, communicating effectively, imagination, problem solving, and collaboration.  Be prepared for a fun session that will open you up to possibilities of music that you might not have ever dreamt about.
