The Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education is happy to announce our 85th Cartoon Caption Contest!  Each month a cartoon, drawn by British cartoonist John Landers, is posted for you and your students to suggest statistical captions (cartoons are posted at the beginning of the month and submissions are due at the end of the month).   The caption contest is offered as a fun way to get your students thinking independently about statistical concepts.

The best submission will be posted on CAUSEweb and the winner(s) will receive their choice of a coffee mug or t-shirt imprinted with the final cartoon or free registration to eCOTS2024.

May Results:  

The May caption contest cartoon is shown here. The judges found the winning caption to be “Graphics lead the pack when communicating with diverse crowds.” written by retired Jim Alloway from EMSQ Associates.  Jim’s caption is a good reminder that graphics can convey a more convincing and realistic view of what data are telling us than merely presenting numerical or tabular results.  An honorable mention this month goes to Larry Lesser from The University of Texas at El Paso for the caption: “In the long run, we all use stats!,” that can be used to both spark discussion of the prevalence of statistics in all of our activities or to focus on a specific case like the wearable exercise trackers that runners use to monitor their pace.
