We are excited to share ads for two non-tenure track open positions here at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri.

The Statistics faculty at Truman are dedicated to excellent teaching and building connections with students not just in our program, but across campus, including a required introductory statistics course for all undergraduates. We also support students and faculty in related areas, including business, accounting, psychology, economics, biology, health, linguistics, and environmental science. One position is targeted with a data science focus. This is a potentially remote, 11-month position with expected summer coursework and master's thesis advising. The second is a more traditional nine-month non-tenure-track statistics position, with no remote option. Expected teaching would be in introductory statistics, mid-level undergraduate service courses such as Regression, ANOVA, or nonparametric statistics, and other courses consistent with the candidate's background and interests. A terminal degree is not required for the Instructor title, but those with a terminal degree would be eligible to be hired as Assistant Professor and a salary premium. In addition to our undergraduate statistics major and several minors, we have recently launched a Masters in Data Science and Analytical Storytelling, combining statistics and technical coding skills with broader skills (I’d never call them “soft”) including writing, rhetoric, design, and ethics. In its second year, it has quickly become among the largest graduate programs on our primarily undergraduate campus.

Non-Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Statistics and Data Science

Truman State University

The School of Science and Mathematics at Truman State University is seeking applicants for at least one non-tenure-track position in Statistics and/or Data Science to begin August 2023. The position is expected to be at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position is a renewable one-year, full-time appointment on an 11-month contract with annual renewal depending on performance, departmental needs, and funding.

Responsibilities: Teach undergraduate statistics and data science courses and graduate data science courses offered by the Department of Statistics, mentor Master's students, and perform other duties as assigned. Such duties could include advising, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, or service to the university and community. Summer duties include teaching, mentoring, and serving on master's thesis committees.

Location: The ideal candidate would be willing and able to relocate to the Kirksville area, but candidates wanting to work remotely will be considered. Candidates should indicate in their cover letter if they are interested in working from a location other than Kirksville, Missouri. Actual remote work locations must be pre-approved.

Required Qualifications: A doctoral degree in statistics, data science, data analytics, computer science, or a closely related field, with substantial coursework or teaching experience in statistics and/or data science by the date of employment. The candidate must demonstrate scholarly activity sufficient to merit appointment to our Graduate Faculty within a year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications: Candidates will receive preferred consideration for:

Academic qualifications above the minimum listed above,

Demonstrated potential for and evidence of excellence in teaching college-level statistics and data science,
Evidence of strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills,
Experience with modern statistical software (especially R, but also Python and/or distributed computing platforms, such as Kubernetes, Spark or Hadoop),
Demonstrated potential for and evidence of excellence in teaching undergraduate courses in data science and graduate courses offered within the professional data science and analytic storytelling program, and program prerequisites such as introductory statistics and computer science,
Ability to advise and mentor graduate students in data science, including supervising masters' theses and serving on thesis committees,
Ability to teach multiple undergraduate statistics courses taught within the statistics program (beyond data science coursework), and
Desire and ability to support Truman’s liberal arts mission, including how statistics and data science students consider communication, ethics, and the broader impact on society.

Program: The Department of Statistics at Truman State University supports a Masters Degree in Data Science and Analytic Storytelling, an undergraduate statistics major, and undergraduate certificate in data science. The department has 10 full-time faculty members with a variety of specialties who support our programs and campus-wide needs with over 50 sections of undergraduate statistics/data science and 20 sections of graduate data science courses annually. We also offer minors in Statistics and Data Science and actively support an Actuarial Science minor, statistically-related majors across campus, and other interdisciplinary areas.
