March 14, 2006: USCOTS Webinar

"Using the ARTIST website to develop assessments for introductory statistics" with Bob delMas.
During this webinar, ARTIST team member Bob delMas guided people through the ARTIST website. The tour included an overview of an online collection of literature on assessment in statistics education, much of which can be accessed online or downloaded. Resources for creating alternative forms of assessment such as student projects were also presented. People also learned about efficient ways to create assessments from items from the ARTIST Item Database using a tool known as the Assessment Builder. By the end of the session, they learned how to select assessment items and download them in a format that can be edited with a word processor.

January 12 - 15, 2006: ARTIST Mini course at JMM in San Antonio, Texas

A MAA Mini course on Designing and Evaluating Assessments for Introductory Statistics took place at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, San Antonio, Texas, from January 12 to January 15, 2005. Workshop Leaders included Beth Chance (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo), Bob delMas (University of Minnesota), and Allan Rossman (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo). Statistics teachers find it challenging to construct student assessments that focus on conceptual understanding, allow consistent scoring, and provide informative feedback. Participants were involved in constructing assessment instruments for use in introductory courses using an on-line assessment resource, ARTIST, and in evaluating the results. We discussed guidelines of effective assessment, resources for assessment material categorized by concept and level of difficulty, suggestions for evaluating student performance through examinations and performance assessments, and used of a comprehensive first-course exam. Participants were invited to pilot items, contribute new items, and share outcome data for comparison across institutions through ARTIST.

November 12, 2005: ARTIST Workshop at AMATYC in San Diego, California

We presented a 2-hour ARTIST workshop at the AMATYC conference in November (San Diego). The workshop took place on Saturday, November 12, 2005, from 1:15 to 3:15PM in the Sunset room of the Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, near Old Town San Diego. This workshop provided experience using online tools to produce assessments for an introductory statistics course. Using resources developed by the Assessment Resources Tools for Improving Statistical Thinking (ARTIST), the workshop covered basic principles of assessment design, introduced the ARTIST website, and provided hands-on experience using ARTIST materials to develop assessments.

August 6, 2005: Workshop on Assessment and ARTIST Resources in Minneapolis

A free workshop sponsored by the ARTIST project was be held prior to the Joint Statistical Meetings, Saturday, August 6, 1-5pm, at the University of Minnesota. In the workshop, participants had the opportunity to explore the ARTIST website including the Assessment Builder, to discuss issues related to assessing introductory statistics students (e.g., developing assessment items and alternative types of assessments), to participate in guided activities that challenged them to consider the implications of students’ responses on assessment items for modifying instruction, and to brainstorm individualized assessment plans. Workshop presenters included: Allan Rossman and Beth Chance, (Cal Poly), Bob delMas (University of Minnesota), and John Holcomb (Cleveland State).
